  3. The Future of Infrastructure Maintenance — Crack Detection Sensors for Real-Time Monitoring

Around the world, aging infrastructure has become a growing concern. Many bridges, tunnels, and concrete structures around the world—especially those built during the postwar economic boom in regions such as Japan, Europe, or North America—are now reaching or exceeding 50 years of service life. A major issue facing infrastructure managers is the early detection of structural deterioration, especially concrete cracking. While emerging technologies such as drones, AI-based analysis, and structural health monitoring are gaining attention, conventional inspection methods still rely heavily on manual, periodic checks, which are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often reactive rather than preventive. WHEC’s wall crack detectors offer a potential solution to these challenges.

Crack Moving Detector

Crack moving detector This product is used by installing a base plate on the concrete surface and attaching the main body to the plate using magnets. (Fig.1) With advanced CIS (Contact Image Sensor) imaging technology and LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) communication, this sensor enables unattended crack monitoring for up to 5 years, even in hard-to-reach or elevated locations. The system is battery-powered, and the battery can be replaced for repeated long-term use. Thanks to the CIS imaging technology, the device captures 1:1 distortion-free images, allowing for full-scale crack measurement with high accuracy. It is capable of detecting cracks as small as 0.021 mm. To reduce the load on the management server, only differential changes in the crack are transmitted to the monitoring center. Data communication uses the LTE Cat.M1 protocol over 4G cellular networks. The sensor is also equipped with an internal temperature and humidity sensor, enabling simultaneous environmental monitoring. Its dustproof and water-resistant construction makes it suitable for reliable outdoor operation in various weather conditions. For more details, please refer to this article.

Crack Digital Scale

The handheld type allows you to measure cracks on the spot as they appear. The sensor automatically measures the crack width, offering greater accuracy and consistency compared to manual inspection using a traditional visual. This helps reduce labor time and human error during measurement. Like Crack Moving Detector, it can detect cracks as small as 0.021 mm. Compact and lightweight at just approximately 300 grams, the device is easy to carry and operate in the field. Simply press the sensor gently against the crack to instantly measure its width. With just a few button presses, the measurement data is saved to internal memory. The device has a minimal number of buttons, making it intuitive and easy for anyone to use. Data can be transferred directly to a PC via USB connection, and the included PC application allows for simple and streamlined data access. Powered by standard AA alkaline batteries, the device can be used repeatedly by replacing the batteries as needed. For more details about the portable measurement type, please visit this page.

In today’s infrastructure landscape, ensuring safety and sustainability is a global imperative. Our wall crack detectors offer a small but powerful tool that helps asset managers make informed, proactive decisions. Our technology supports infrastructure monitoring by enabling real-time detection, measurement, and response to cracks—starting from the smallest signs of deterioration.
